Free by Mark Buxton is a fragrance that explores every facet of incense. The amber, resinous notes of vanilla, patchouli, benzoin and labdanum form a warm base, while the smoky, fresh notes of bergamot, frankincense and birch together evoke the scent of smoke. For Mark and David, simple formulas are the rule: no note is added to the composition at random. The message has to come across clearly. The formulas are simple, yet challenging at the same time. When a fragrance calls for it, they do not shy away from ‘overdosing’ a particular ingredient. Some notes reach a concentration of as much as 10%. Simplicity demands strict balance, with every ingredient playing a crucial role.
